About the Red Fort

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the Red Fort in 1639. He hired Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the chief architect of the Taj Mahal. The complex features a distinctive octagonal layout.

The fort synthesizes Persian, Timurid, and Indian architectural traditions. It served as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad. A continuous water channel, the Nahr-i-Behisht, connects the private apartments.

The fort underwent major changes after the 1857 Indian Rebellion. The British military demolished many inner structures. Today, you can explore the surviving Audience Halls and the historic Entrances and Markets.

Memorable India booked me front-row seats for the Red Fort Light and Sound Show, and it was worth every minute. Hari, my driver, picked me up from my hotel and gave me a short tour of Old Delhi before the show. The combination of lights, sound, and history really brought the fort’s past to life. A perfect short cultural outing.
